Sulawesi Shrimp Care Guide

A Different Kind of Freshwater Shrimp

Sulawesi shrimp, native to the ancient lakes of Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, are among the most striking and demanding species in the hobby. Their vivid colors and unusual patterns have made them increasingly popular, but they require a very specific environment to thrive.

Water Parameters Are Non-Negotiable

Unlike the more adaptable Neocaridina, Sulawesi shrimp need warm, stable water, typically 78 to 82°F, with a higher pH (7.5 to 8.5) and specific mineral content that mimics their volcanic lake habitat. Fluctuations outside this range quickly stress or kill these shrimp, making them unsuitable for beginners.

Substrate and Hardscape

A specialized substrate that maintains higher pH and mineral levels is essential, paired with plenty of leaf litter, botanicals, and smooth rock to replicate their natural lake floor habitat. Java moss and other low-light plants provide grazing surfaces without competing for the mineral-rich water conditions Sulawesi shrimp require.

Feeding and Behavior

Sulawesi shrimp are active grazers that spend most of the day picking through biofilm and botanical leaf litter. A varied diet of quality shrimp foods, supplemented with Indian almond leaves and catappa bark, supports both nutrition and the tannin-rich water many species seem to prefer.

Community Tank Limitations

Because Sulawesi shrimp need warmer, higher-pH water than most other popular shrimp and many nano fish, they generally do best in a dedicated species-only tank rather than a mixed community. Attempting to compromise water parameters to suit multiple species usually leaves everyone, Sulawesi shrimp especially, worse off than a tank built around their specific needs.

Sourcing Healthy Stock

Because Sulawesi shrimp are more sensitive to shipping stress than hardier species, sourcing from a seller experienced in packing and shipping these specific animals matters more than usual. Ask about holding temperatures and transit time before ordering to reduce the risk of arrival stress.

Long-Term Commitment

Because of their specific needs, Sulawesi shrimp are best approached as a long-term specialty project rather than an impulse purchase, with a setup dedicated specifically to replicating their native lake conditions. Keepers who succeed with this species often describe it as one of the most rewarding, if demanding, corners of the entire shrimp-keeping hobby.

Is Sulawesi Right for You

Given their narrow parameter tolerance, Sulawesi shrimp are best suited to keepers who already have experience maintaining stable water with more forgiving freshwater shrimp species first. Building that foundational experience makes the transition to these spectacular but demanding shrimp far more likely to succeed.
